It's an incredibly compelling song, but the rest of "Remote Luxury" doesn't even come close. Sure, there are two other very good songs on the album -- "Constant In Opal" (also an effective repeating guitar phrase), and the moving "A Month of Sundays." "Maybe These Boys" starts off promising with a brash sound, but then goes on for far too long/5(11).

The highlight of the sweetly jangly Remote Luxury EP (and of the U.S.-only album of the same title that followed a few months later), "A Month of Sundays" suggests that R.E.M.'s first couple of records might have made it down to Australia by the time the Church convened to record this. Opening with a mandolin-like guitar part that strums away over waves of feedback in the back .

Collecting the contents of two separate EPs into a full-length album for American purposes, Remote Luxury actually makes for a reasonable release, avoiding the miserable drum sound that plagued Sé band are hardly so groansome, mixing the light synth touches evident on Séance with a tight, sharp postpunk groove. While the comparisons to bands like R.E.M. were 8/

"A Month of Sundays" starts out in a semi-progressive vein, but has an overly "pop" chorus and little production. "Volumes" has an interesting chromatic chord progression in the verses, and a somewhat Beatle-esque chorus, but would also have benefited from fuller production. "Remote Luxury" is both the most satisfying and important track/5(3).
